Hi, I'm Rachel.

The one-woman show behind Furtographer, full-time animal enthusiast.

Furtographer is just me. No big studio, no corporate structure, no team of assistants. Just me, my camera, and my Greyhound Moosie.

I have a genuine, natural affinity with animals. Always have. It's not something I learned or developed, it's just how I'm wired, and it's the thing that makes this job feel less like work and more like something I'd be doing anyway.

How I got here

It began in Africa.

I decided I needed a big fancy camera to go on safari, so I bought one with a long lens, had absolutely no idea how to use it, and came home with photos that are... well, they are my memories and I love the happiness they inspire. Photographically though, rubbish.

So I did what any reasonable person would do and went down a very long YouTube rabbit hole. I became that person at every party with a camera before smartphones were a thing. I took my camera everywhere, learning as I went.

I started photographing friends, families, pets, basically anyone who would let me point a camera at them. I shot newborns for a while, which feels like a completely different universe from where I am now. Then I started volunteering at a local animal rescue, and that was it. Something clicked. I very quickly decided that this little business of mine was going to shift entirely in their direction.

Ten years later, here we are.

A few things so you know I'm a real person

The important stuff

I will 100% cross the road to pat your dog. Every time, without hesitation, no apology. Whilst I love all animals, dogs are my absolute numero uno. Spiders, however, do not even show me a picture or I will freak.

I base my holidays around two things: music and animals. I've been to all seven continents chasing both. Penguins in Antarctica, elephants in Sri Lanka, pandas in China, and because I'm not a complete animal nerd, Coachella and Glastonbury too. If you plan trips around wildlife or a band lineup rather than a resort pool, we're going to get along just fine.

I hate wearing shoes. In a studio session you'll find me barefoot or in socks. At an outdoor session, the shoes are off the second I get back to the car. This is non-negotiable and I've fully accepted it about myself.

The Boss

And then there's Moosie.

My rescue Greyhound, my best mate, and the unofficial mascot of Furtographer. Her mum was surrendered to a rescue heavily pregnant and full of worms, and I was one of nine lucky people who got to adopt one of her pups. Moosie has been with me ever since, and if you spot me out and about, there's a very good chance she's right there beside me. She's the reason this whole thing makes sense.
