The Last Photo in Your Camera Roll

February 04, 20263 min read

Last night I posted something simple on Facebook.

“Drop the last photo you took of your pet.”

And wow… you delivered.

Tongues out. Weird sleeping positions. Side-eye galore. Funny moments.

But mixed in between the funny ones were comments that stopped me in my tracks.

“This was the last photo I ever took of him.”
“We said goodbye two days later.”
“I didn’t know this would be our last week together.”

Those ones hit hard.

Because every single one of those people thought they had more time.

We Always Think There’s More Time

We do it without realising.

We think:
“I’ll book photos when life calms down.”
“When they’re better trained.”
“When I’ve lost a bit of weight.”
“When work isn’t so busy.”
“When I’ve saved a bit more.”

But here’s the truth – and it’s not a comfortable one.

Our pets age faster than we do. A lot faster.

A year for us is a chapter.
A year for them can be a whole life stage.

The grey hairs creep in. The muzzle fades. They slow down. They sleep a bit more. And because we see them every day, we don’t notice the change happening in real time.

Until one day, we do.

The Regret I Hear Most

I talk to pet owners every single week. Happy stories, new puppies, rescue wins… but also the hard ones.

And the sentence I hear over and over again is:

“I wish I’d done photos sooner.”

Not:
“I wish I’d waited until I lost weight.”
“I wish the house were cleaner.”
“I wish I’d saved that money instead.”

It’s always about time. Not having enough of it. Not realising how little was left.

Photos become priceless the moment they’re all you have left.

Phone Photos Are Beautiful… But They’re Not the Same

Your phone camera roll is full of love. And I adore that, mine is too.

Professional photos aren’t about perfection. They’re about preservation.

They freeze this version of your life before it quietly changes.

Time Is the One Thing We Don’t Get Back

This is the part nobody likes to talk about, but we all know it’s true.

One day, without warning or with far too much warning, it will be the last photo.

The last walk.
The last cuddle on the couch.
The last time they greeted you at the door.

And when that day comes, no one ever says,
“I’m glad I waited.”

They say,
“I wish I’d done this earlier.”

If You’ve Been Thinking About It… This Is Your Sign

Not next year.
Not when life is less busy.
Not when everything is perfect.

Now. While they’re still here. While their eyes are bright. While their tail still thumps when you say their name.

Because one day, these photos won’t just be nice to have.

They’ll be everything.
